Invite member in GitHub

One Slack request. One invitation, with the right teams.

The problem

Day one starts. Their repos aren’t there yet.

A new engineer is ready to work, and their manager pings an admin to add them to GitHub. The admin sends the invitation, then works out which teams the role needs from memory or an old message.

Miss a team and they spend their first day asking for the repository they were hired to work on. Add the wrong one and they can read code they should not. Done by hand, two engineers in the same role rarely get the same teams.

The outcome

The invitation arrives with the right teams

Stepwork invites the new engineer to your GitHub organization and adds each team in the request. Once they accept, they can open their team’s repositories. The run records who asked and which teams were added.

  • The invitation goes to the GitHub username in the request.
  • Every team in the request is added.
  • A team that does not exist stops the run.

The process

From Slack request to a pending invitation

A manager posts the new engineer’s details in Slack. Stepwork sends the invitation from your GitHub organization settings and adds their teams, in the same order every time.

  1. Step 1

    Request it in Slack

A manager posts the new engineer’s GitHub username and their teams in the onboarding channel. That message starts the flow, and Stepwork records who asked and when.

  2. Step 2

    Invite the member

Stepwork signs in to GitHub, opens the organization’s People page, and invites the person as a member. If they are already in the organization, the run stops instead of sending a second invitation.

  3. Step 3

    Add their teams

Stepwork selects each team from the request on the invitation. Those teams grant the repositories the engineer needs.

  4. Step 4

    Confirm and reply in Slack

Stepwork checks that the invitation is pending with the right teams, then posts the result back in the onboarding channel.

Why Stepwork

The same role gets the same teams

A deterministic agent follows one path: invite the member, then add each team from the request. Two engineers in the same role get the same teams, whoever picks up the request.

FAQ

Common questions

  • Post their GitHub username and their teams in Slack. Stepwork sends the invitation from the People page with each team added.
  • As soon as they accept the invitation. Until then it shows as pending in your organization.
  • No. This flow only works in GitHub. Their identity account comes from a separate flow, creating the user and assigning groups in Okta.
