The problem
They’ve left. They can still clone the repo.
An engineer’s GitHub account belongs to them, so it stays when they leave. What has to end is their place in your organization, and that waits until someone with owner rights opens the organization settings and removes them by hand.
Until then they can still read and clone every private repository their teams can reach. The seat keeps being billed, and nobody writes down when code access ended.
The outcome
Code access ends the day employment does
Stepwork removes the member from your GitHub organization. Their access to its private repositories ends, the seat is freed, and the run records who asked and when. It is one step of employee offboarding, done when the request lands.
- The member is removed from the organization and its teams.
- The seat is freed for the next hire.
- The run stops if no member matches the request.
The process
From Slack request to removed member
A teammate posts the request in Slack. Stepwork removes the member in your GitHub organization settings, in the same order every time.
- Step 1
Request it in Slack
A teammate posts the departing engineer’s GitHub username in the offboarding channel. That message starts the flow, and Stepwork records who asked and when.

- Step 2
Find the member
Stepwork signs in to GitHub with a credential read from 1Password at run time and opens the organization’s People page. If no member matches, the run stops instead of guessing.

- Step 3
Remove from the organization
Stepwork removes the member, the same action an organization owner takes from the People list. Their access to the organization’s private repositories ends.

- Step 4
Confirm and reply in Slack
Stepwork checks that the person no longer appears in the member list, then posts the result back in Slack with a timestamp.

Why Stepwork
Removed from the organization, nothing more
Stepwork runs the path you recorded in your GitHub organization settings. It removes the member and stops there. Their personal account and their own repositories belong to them, so the path leaves those alone.
