Deactivate member in Slack

One request. Workspace access removed.

The problem

They left the company. They’re still in the channels.

Slack is often the last account anyone thinks about in offboarding. Until an admin deactivates the member, the person who left can still read channels, open files, and message customers in shared channels.

Deactivating takes seconds, but it depends on someone remembering. When it is missed, nobody notices until the person shows up as active weeks later.

The outcome

Workspace access ends with the request

Stepwork deactivates the Slack member. They are signed out of every channel and file, and the run records who asked and when the account was deactivated.

  • The member is signed out of the workspace.
  • The run stops if the email has no match.
  • The offboarding channel gets the result.

The process

From request to removed workspace access

A teammate posts the request in Slack. Stepwork deactivates the member in Slack’s admin settings, so they lose access to every channel and file.

  1. Step 1

    Request it in Slack

A teammate posts the departing employee’s work email in the offboarding channel. That message starts the flow, and Stepwork records who asked and when.

  2. Step 2

    Find the member by email

Stepwork signs in to Slack’s member management page and searches for that exact work email. If there is no match, the run stops instead of guessing.

Slack Manage members search showing one result for leila.hassan@blueharbor.io
  3. Step 3

    Deactivate the account

Stepwork deactivates the member. They are signed out and can no longer open the workspace.

  4. Step 4

    Confirm and reply

Stepwork checks that the member shows as deactivated, then posts the result back in the offboarding channel.

Why Stepwork

Deactivating the member is the path

Stepwork signs in to Slack’s member management, finds the person by email, and deactivates them. Workspace access ends in that run, rather than when someone next notices they are still in a channel.

  • No. A deactivated member loses access to the workspace, including channels and files.
  • No. Credentials stay in 1Password. Stepwork signs in to Slack’s member management the way an admin does, and it stores the vault reference, never the password.
